Pre-S: Today's essay is based on another beautiful question and suggested topic from a Thinking In Waves reader. The engagement, questions, and reflections from this community are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much! What To Do With CalmAs we attempt to optimize Every task, routine, and process, In hopes of maximizing every opportunity, The absence of momentum Can be Unsettling... When the sea becomes flat and the waves are far away, Questions arise: What did I do wrong? Am I missing something? How is the action passing me by? When an environment That is constantly stimulated by Noise, Hype, and Fear Becomes the norm, The appearance of Calm Can create doubt, Challenge the senses, and Distort our perspective. When the Waves are not present, And Free Energy is not a possibility, How can we better respond to Calm? The 2nd step of the Wave Surfing Progression is a timely tap on the shoulder: Direction. Calm is a moment of reset and The space to recalibrate the basics, Which is the ideal prompt To check our Direction - Realign the compass with the map... Without disruption. To live in a world where What everyone is doing Is seen, heard, and felt At amplified levels All the time Pulls attention away from ourselves... Leaving Direction unchecked and Increasing the conditions for drifting off course. During periods of Calm, Instead of fully checking out, What if we simply Fully check in? To re-align our goals and values with Our systems and capacities. To re-align body, mind, and spirit with The inward journey. So that when the Waves reappear, We are ready To Fully Engage With Full Confidence In our chosen Direction. With gratitude, Joe PS - The day before publishing this essay, my friend and Thinking In Waves reader, Sande Golgart, and I hosted the Part One of An Expansive Life Conversation, an exchange of deep and meaningful ideas about life, health, wealth, and relationships, especially in Midlife. During the livestream, another Thinking In Waves reader asked us nearly the same question as the reader who suggested today's essay. So many people are curious about these topics and want to explore them more deeply. As we received outstanding feedback from our first program, I would like to invite you to join Sande and me for Parts Two & Three of An Expansive Life Conversation on Tuesday, July 8th and Tuesday, July 15th. Start times for both events are 6pm BST🇬🇧, 1pm ET🇺🇸, and 10am PT🇺🇸. The conversations are absolutely free and can be watched live on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Facebook. Beyond Hard Work All of the sermons, praise, and platitudes Can be overwhelming, overbearing, and never-ending. Yet, in the pursuit of growth and improvement, It is hard to imagine elevating performance Without Working Hard. Throughout most of my 55 years, I have swung from the “hard work” pendulum between Preaching And Compliance. To work hard Seemed so obvious That I rarely questioned The stability of the fixture That holds the Hard Work pendulum in place. However, Surfing waves on the...
The Next Right Move What is the next right move? Next year? Next month? Next week? Today? As nobody wants to get this wrong, The question has the power to: Raise doubt Increase resistance and Push back Because When we consider this question While rushing through life and Striving on autopilot, A gap is created between Where we are And Where we think we should be. And to our detriment, Overreaching for "Should" Does not reveal A great next right move. Adding more weight and drag to Our efforts...
The Value Of UpWind Most every Thinking In Waves essay Is based on the idea of Surfing Waves That follow the direction of the wind… Which is called a DownWind. DownWinds are what we want most - At sea And in Life. They generate the greatest amount of Fun Engagement and Free Energy. Yet, Over the course of my life, I have spent - And continue to spend - Countless hours Paddling a canoe against the flow of the river current Running and skiing up mountains And Paddling a surfski against the...
