Thinking In Waves: Narrow The View

Pre-S: I know that most of you read my PS below the essay. Do not miss this today! 🌊🌊🌊

Narrow The View

The question is no longer,

“Is indecision a problem?”

We are well into the territory of

“How is indecision holding us back and what are going to do about it?”

Opportunity has never been more visible -

Enticing improvement and possibility

As far as the eye can see,

Which is exciting…

But equally overwhelming.

So much to evaluate and compare

Which leads to more uncertainty, fatigue, and inevitably,

Indecision.

Here, we feel the pain of easily accessible, nonstop 180 degree views.

In the spirit of Linking Waves over Jumping,

What if we narrowed the view?

Not a little...

A LOT.

As we implement Boyan's Golden Rule Of Surfing

And focus on the wave we currently ride,

Instead of looking at everything,

Choose a short, focused, and curious glance

That connects with a space

Just a little beyond from where we are

That uniquely informs us

About an opportunity

To shift and advance

Towards the nearby next step.

Such a narrow glance builds a bridge

That holds more than enough

Attention

Clarity

Space

To simply and effectively

Link from one wave to the next

And nothing more…

Until the opportunity to repeat the process appears again.

What beats Indecision?

A decision process

That narrows the view

To a simple and clear choice.

A decision process that facilitates

Progress

Consistency

Ease.

Bonus points for leveraging maximum Free Energy.

With gratitude, Joe

PS - Every Thinking In Waves essay has a postscript but never have I looked forward to one more than this...

To see, feel, and understand the benefit of Narrowing The View, watch this mesmerizing video of Coach Boyan mastering the art of linking waves.

Here's what to watch for:

  1. The red arrows that appear in front of the surfski indicate the next nearby wave to which Boyan is looking and Linking.
  2. Although he is surrounding by amazing waves in every direction, notice how Boyan limits the intake of possibility by focusing on the next nearby connecting point... over and over again.
  3. Finally, by limiting the intake of possibility and choices, notice whether or not Boyan wins Free Energy. (Best indicator <-- the absolute minimum number of paddle strokes while holding maximum speed towards a desired goal over the five minute period.)

This is a Masterclass in Transition disguised in pure Wave Linking excellence. This concept - and every concept shared in Thinking In Waves - applies the same to our own Life Waves... as long as we commit to the practice.

Dropping Back In the process of surfing a wave, It can be so easy to Lock In, Dig deep, And convince ourselves That we either SURF THIS WAVE Or Everything will be lost. So we Grind Fight Persevere At any cost Because We are sure that This is THE WAVE. I love capturing the energy Of a great opportunity. But, doing so with a tight grip Rarely serves me well. The basis of Thinking In Waves Is built upon the Wave Surfing Progression That I learned and continue to develop under the guidance of...

How Effortless Can It Be? After focusing on elements of "preparation" for the past several weeks, Let's return to the surfing technique that yields our ultimate benefit - Free Energy - Which lives in Step Four of the Wave Surfing Progression: Surf the Wave. Here, I turn to my amazing coach, Boyan, for a visual reflection of Free Energy's accessibility - Four Minutes of surfing waves Without a single push of forward propulsion from his paddle - Not only is this an incredible accomplishment...
